Why We Should Recycle Textiles
When people see that they can recycle textiles their first question would be why we should recycle textiles. This is a valid question that they ask. There are a number of reasons for why this should be done. The main reason would be to help the environment.
There are many facts that you should be aware of when looking at textile recycling. One fact is that textiles will be 3 to 5% of household waste. Additionally if every person were to buy only one recycled textile garment per year the savings on water and chemicals would be over 300 million gallons and over 400 tons.
As some of the recycled clothing is exported to countries in need you will be helping people when recycling. This is particularly important due to the fact that over 70% of the world population will use second hand or recycled clothing. Any textile that is not torn or stained will be sent to those who are in need all around the world.
Landfills are a problem that people have started looking at in recent years. All textiles that are not recycled are sent to landfills and they can cause serious problems there. Synthetic textiles do not actually decompose so they will stay in the ground intact. Wool cloths will decompose but when they do they create methane which is attributed to things like climate change and global warning.
Another reason for why we should recycle textiles is that the process creates jobs. In the current economic climate the creation of jobs is something that should be looked at. The fact that the textiles need to be sorted to see if they can be reused or will be sent to a factory that cuts the textile into wipes means that they need people to do this.
Why we should recycle textiles is a question that has many answers. There are many reasons to do this from the environment to job creation.
