Textile Recycling Facts

Textile Recycling Facts And Information

More than one million tons of textiles are discarded every year. The bulk of this comes from household sources, but also from fabric and yarn manufacturers. There is also a supply from garment manufacturers and the retail industry. Most of this waste is recyclable, however, a limited proportion of it is reused or recycled. These are but a couple of the textile recycling facts that you should be aware of.

This industrial waste and consumer waste provides a major potential for recovery as well as recycling. Recovery and recycling makes available economic and environmental advantages. It reduces the requirement for landfill areas. Textiles create problems in landfill areas as the man-made synthetic fiber products do not decompose. The woolen garments will decompose, but they produce methane and this influences global warming.

Another benefit is the reduction of usage of virgin resources. Economically it is viable as the need for material imports will be diminished. The reclamation of textiles eliminates energy intensive processes. There will be elimination of vast amounts of water that is required to wash raw wool. The items will not need to be re-dyed and that will create energy saving. This reduction in the demand for dyes will avoid the problems that are created by their manufacturing process and use.

Some of the industrial waste is normally recycled by the manufacturer or it is sold to merchants. The rest of it goes to landfill or it is incinerated. Alternatively, if the clothing is not sold or if it is not wearable, the organizations will sell it to the industry to be used as raw materials.

There are organizations that collect used shoes. Most of these are re-usable. The shoes will be sorted according to the condition that they are in and it will then be sold into developing countries. They are usually reconditioned there and will be resold.

Woolen garments that are not wearable are sold to fiber reclamation companies. They recycle these in order to make fabric or yarn. Cotton and silk items will be sorted in different grades and made into wiping cloths for various industries like mining and the automotive industry. It is also used in the paper manufacturing trade. Other items of clothing that are not wearable will be shredded and used for fillers in roofing felts, car insulation and furniture padding etc.

Industrial waste is normally reprocessed by the manufacturer. The clippings that come from garment manufacture are often used by fiber reclaiming organizations to produce garments and blankets. In a minority of cases this waste will be used to fashion bags etc.
